A playwright, librettist, and screenwriter, David Ives was born in Chicago in 1950. He was educated at Northwestern University and the Yale School of Drama, and became well known in the 1990s for his collection of short comic plays, All in the Timing. After the incredible success of the plays (they won multiple awards and in the 1995-1996 season, a few years after their first production in 1993, became the most-produced texts in the United States not written by Shakespeare), Ives was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for Playwriting in 1995.
