Chapter 1 - Linear Functions - Chapter Review - Review Exercises - Page 40: 27

Answer

$y=-x-3$

Work Step by Step

$y-y_{1}=m(x-x_{1})$ is the point-slope form: slope $m$ and line passes through $(x_{1}, y_{1})$. (solve for y to obtain the form y=mx+b ,slope-intercept) We find the slope from $m=\displaystyle \frac{y_{2}-y_{1}}{x_{2}-x_{1}}$ where $x_{1}\neq x_{2}$. $m=\displaystyle \frac{-5-3}{2-(-6)}=\frac{-8}{8}=-1$ So, from the point-slope form: $y-3=-1[x-(-6)]$ $y-3=-x-6$ $y=-x-3$
