It was only in very recent past that vast majority of societies learned about equality among different genders. While Pythagoras considered different genders as equals about 2500 years ago. There are many great mathematicians with great discoveries, but Pythagoras was different. He devoted his studies not only to the subject itself, but also spreading what he discovered among everyone; no matter of their gender.
The religious brotherhood of Pythagoreans was founded my Pythagoras. It was time when he moved to southern Italy, in around 532 BCE.
