Chapter 1 - Self-Review Test - Page 28: 5

Answer

A random sample is a sample drawn in such a way that each element of the population has same opportunity being included in the sample. A nonrandom sample is a sample drawn in such a way that each element of the population will not have equal opportunity being selected from the sample A representative sample is a sample that contains the characteristics of the population as closely as possible. A convenience sample is a sample that includes the most accessible members of the population. A judgement sample is a sample that include the elements of the population based on the judgement and prior knowledge of the expert. A quota sample is a sample selected in such a way that each group or sub population is represented in the sample in exactly same proportion as in the target population In a sample with replacement, each time we select an element from the population it is being put back before we select the next element. Therefore, the population contains the same number of items each time a selection is made. In a sample without replacement, the selected element is not replaced in a population. As a result, the size of the population is reduced by one element each time we select an item.
