A sampling method is independent when the individuals selected for one sample do not dictate which individuals are to be in a second sample. Here the sampling method is independent because the individuals were randomly selected and so members in the second group are not determined by the selection of people in the first group.
The response variable is people's opinion, yes or no, to the question. Thus it is qualitative.
