Chapter 3 - The Cellular Level of Organization - Checkpoint - Page 98: 30

Answer

Apoptosis and necrosis are two processes that both cause the death of cells. However in most other ways they are dissimilar. Apoptosis has been described as cell death by shrinkage, while necrosis is said to cause cell death by swelling. Regarding the issue of causation, apoptosis is said to be derived from natural causes programmed in the physiology of animals. Necrosis, on the other hand, is viewed as being caused by external factors or disease agents. So apoptosis whre apopotosis is seen as partially beneficial. As such, it is regarded as a normal process that may be beneficial necrosis is considered to be always abnormal and harmful

Work Step by Step

There are no known symptoms or signs that one may describe for apoptosis, but the signs and symptoms of necrosis are classical, and well-known; these include inflammation, decreased blood flow, pain, tissue death and gangrene. The common infectious causes of necrosis are bacteria, fungus, Impaired circulation, antibody-antigen complex formation; also, systemic diseases like pancreatitis can cause necrosis. In necrosis the cell membrane is affected and as cellular respiration is impaired ATP supply fails; the results are that metabolism collapses, cells swell and rupture, then cell death and general tissue inflammation supervene.
