Chapter 9 - Section 9.4 - The Accessory Organs and Regulation of Secretions - Check Your Progress - Page 179: 1

Answer

The pancreas produces pancreatic juice, which contains sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) and digestive enzymes. Sodium bicarbonate neutralizes acid chyme from the stomach. Enzymes present in pancreatic juice include pancreatic amylase which digests starch, trypsin which digests protein, and pancreatic lipase which digests fat. The pancreas also secretes the hormone insulin into the blood stream. The liver filters blood from the GI tract, removing poisons and toxins from blood. The liver also removes iron and the vitamins A, D, E, K, and B12 from blood and stores them. Additionally, In the presence of insulin, the liver stores glucose as glycogen which can later be accessed when blood glucose is low. The liver also Makes plasma proteins, such as albumins and fibrinogen, from amino acids, produces urea after breaking down amino acids, and helps regulate blood cholesterol level, converting some to bile salts. The gallbladder stores bile, which is later used to emulsify fat.
