Poliomyelitis or polio is a disease caused by polio virus. This disease can present as:
• Asymptomatic polio that accounts for 90% of the cases.
• Minor polio, in which the patient presents with nonspecific symptoms like fever sore throat and headache. It accounts for 5 percent of the cases of polio.
• Non paralytic polio, in which the patient presents with nonspecific symptoms (for example fever, headache and sore throat) and specific symptoms like muscle spasm and back pain. It accounts for 2% of the cases.
• Paralytic polio causes paralysis that affects the spinal cord, brain stem or both. It accounts for less than 2% of the cases.
