Chapter 9 - Molecular Orbitals in Chemical Bonding - Exercises - MO Theory: General Concepts - Page 344: 10

Answer

a) The atomic orbital belongs to one atom, whereas the molecular orbital is formed from the combination of many atomic orbitals, and belongs to the whole molecule. b) The bonding orbital occurs when two atomic orbitals overlap in phase, whereas the antibonding orbital occurs when two atomic orbitals overlap out of phase. The bonding orbital has less energy and is therefore more stable than the antibonding orbital. c) When two atomic orbitals overlap $\textbf{head-on}$, they form a sigma molecular orbital. When two atomic orbitals overlap $\textbf {parallel}$ to each other, they form a pi molecular orbital. d) Localized MOs are restricted to only one or two atoms in a molecule, whereas delocalized MOs cover the whole molecule.
