The Babysitter Irony

The Babysitter Irony

True events

The story is an interesting one in the sense that the narration takes place over the course of only a few hours. The events are told from the perspective of different narrators and each narrator claims to recall the true events which transpired. What is ironic is the fact that every narrator has a different version of the events presented.

Fantasizing

At the beginning of the story, the babysitter is presented in a very chaste and childlike manner. The nanny is a teenager herself looking after two children, her purpose making some money. Even though the narrator presents the nanny as an innocent person, it is ironic to see how all the other people fantasize about her in a sexual manner.

Letting his friend rape his girlfriend

Jack is the nanny's girlfriend and he is described at the beginning of the story as sitting in the arcade and playing with his friend. While he is sitting together with his friend, he thinks about how it would be like if his friend were to rape his girlfriend. This is ironic because at the beginning of the story Jack claims to love his girlfriend.

Critisizing the nanny

On the way to the party, the Tuckers talk about the nanny and her capabilities. Before the nanny arrived at their home, the Tuckers were extremely pleased with her. Ironically, however, all this changes once the Tuckers got into the car and were away from their children.

Not so compassionate people

The narrator describes the party the Tuckers attended. At the beginning of the story, the people attending the party are described as being extremely compassionate and kind. It is thus interesting to see how at the end of the story the people attending the party are described as being, ironically, extremely heartless and insensitive.
