Wild West
The story is an eminently western one, so that the image of the West is present in it. This is how the author presents Texas: “Vast flats of green grass, dull-hued spaces of mesquite and cactus, little groups of frame houses, woods of light and tender trees”. The image is used as a background for the events told.
Scratchy Wilson
Scratchy Wilson is a crazy one in the town of Yellow Skyl the description ofhis appearance in the proof of it: “the man's face flamed in a rage begot of whisky. His eyes, rolling and yet keen for ambush, hunted the still doorways and windows. He walked with the creeping movement of the midnight cat. As it occurred to him, he roared menacing information. The long revolvers in his hands were as easy as straws; they were moved with an electric swiftness». The Actions of the story take place in a small town in the wild West, and Wild West has always been famous for people of uncontrollable temperament. Wilson is one of such.
Newly married
The author depicts in details the appearances of both the groom and the bride. These descriptions help to open up their characters, though do not provide a deep look inside. “The man's face was reddened from many days in the wind and sun, and a direct result of his new black clothes was that his brick-colored hands were constantly performing in a most conscious fashion»; “From time to time he looked down respectfully at his attire”, “The bride was not pretty, nor was she very young. She wore a dress of blue cashmere, with small reservations of velvet here and there and with steel buttons abounding”; “she continually twisted her head to regard her puff sleeves, very stiff, straight, and high”. Both the groom and bride seem to be in the wrong place, they have not yet been accustomed to one another.
