The story begins with the introduction of the Zooks and the Yooks, two separate groups of people living on either side of a wall. The protagonist is a young Yook who is taken to the wall by his grandfather. The Yooks wear blue clothes and the Zooks wear orange. the Yooks eat bread with butter-side up, the Zooks eat bread with butter-side down, which causes mutual unrest between the two.
An arms race erupts with slingshots being the main weaponry. They continue to devise more and more outrageous slingshots to outdo the other. They then go on to create a gun called "Kick-A-Poo Kid"and the Zooks retaliate with the "Eight-Nozzled Elephant-Toted Boom Blitz", a type of explosive.
Eventually both sides create a bomb known as "Bitsy Big-Boy Boomeroo" with the book ending with both sides threatening to drop it on either.
