    Theme Tracing

    Kind of Activity:

    Long-term Project

    Objective:

    In groups, students will identify, analyze, and trace one or two major themes as they read the novel.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.2, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.1, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.11-12.2, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.11-12.4

    Structure:

    Have students consider the themes that have arisen in this first section. Encourage them to call out these themes in an informal discussion; write them on the board as the class identifies them. The themes may include:

    -Memory

    -Troubled childhoods

    -Parenting

    -Sibling bonds

    -Destiny/fate

    -Gender roles and expectations

    -The significance of place

    -Regret
