Discussing race in the U.S. will certainly bring up many questions. Thankfully this text is rich with explanation, examples, and carefully helps breakdown the history of racism. However, because this text is rather dated, students may find some of the language used to be mildly offensive, specifically the use of "Negro." Explain that for the era this identifier was appropriate and often used by both Black people, including Baldwin. You should also let your students know that this term is outdated and no longer deemed appropriate. Thus, they should not use it colloquially or beyond discussing this text.
