Structure:

The Commander often seems surprised by the things that are off-limits to Offred, and perplexed by her fear of punishment. (For example, he doesn't understand why Offred is worried her room will be searched and his gifts discovered.) Students should explore Offred and the Commander's relationship and the power dynamic between them.
