The Jade Peony is set in the Chinatown neighborhood of Vancouver, Canada in the 1930s and 1940s, leading up to and including World War II. As such, racism, xenophobia, and biased language are present in the novel, though there are no overly graphic depictions. The novel also includes references to the violence of warfare, domestic violence, as well as an at-home abortion that results in the death of a young woman. This material may be triggering to some students and the teacher should warn the class ahead of time about each of these occurrences.
