The King's Stilts Themes

Being an individual

King Birtram is indeed an unshakable character for such a title, as he is not portrayed in the typical way a king would be in such stories by Seuss. He is neither greedy nor lazy, and he spends his days doing paperwork. Indeed, the stilts are his major hobby and brings him immense happiness, much to the displeasure of Lord Droon. Perhaps this is stressing the fact that one can be more than their label. He is not just a king but also a human himself. He refuses to be dictated by the interests of others and his refusal to change for others is much praised by the rest of the kingdom.

Loyalty

Loyalty is a strong secondary theme running throughout the story. Eric is initially a loyal follower of the king but he bends to the wills of Lord Droon. Thus, his loyalty is questionable, and he is presented as being slightly fickle in nature. Nonetheless, it seems that his loyalty to the king eventually wins out and he returns the stilts, thus strengthening his loyalty to the crown once more.
