The issue is mostly depicted in the community's treatment of Soraya. She is viewed as a "tainted" woman in the eyes of the community for having run away with a man without being married. Even after she returns to her family, the stigmatization does not stop and the members of the community continues to gossip about her and judge her. She argues that the same treatment would not have befallen a man, had he been in her shoes because the Afghan community is more forgiving of men's licentious behavior, while they have rigid expectations that omen be pure and virtuous.
