The Marriage Portrait is a historical fiction novel by Maggie O'Farrell. It tells the story of Lucrezia de' Medici, a young woman who was married off to Alfonso d'Este, the Duke of Ferrara by her parents, to secure an alliance between their two families. Lucrezia is a free-spirited young woman with the heart of an artist who is unprepared for life's strict rules and expectations at the Ferrara court after marrying Alfonso. She never wanted to marry Alfonso in the first place; however, his behavior made her feel stuck and suffocated in her relationship. She is also forced to deal with the constant threat of her husband's infidelity and the chance that he doesn't really love his wife. Despite her challenges, Lucrezia eventually finds her place in the world and becomes a robust and influential figure in the world of art after she leaves her marriage.
The novel is set in the 16th century in Renaissance Italy. O'Farrell does an excellent job of bringing the period to life and making the reader feel as if they are right there with Lucrezia, experiencing all of the joys and sorrows of her life. The characters are well-developed and believable, and the reader can't help but root for Lucrezia to succeed. It is ultimately a story about a young woman who overcomes excellent adversity to find her place in the world.
The Marriage Portrait explores the role of women in society in the 16th century. Lucrezia is a strong and independent woman who is not afraid to speak her mind. However, she is also aware of society's limitations on women, and she must learn to navigate these limitations to survive and thrive. It also explores the theme of love and loss.
