During Chapter Four, "The Chase," what seems to be propelling Ivan forward in his search?

Throughout "The Chase," the both the narrator and Ivan make comments that indicate Ivan somehow knew or "realized" where the professor was hiding. These declarations by the narrator and Ivan seem to imply that there was a third party somehow involved in Ivan's chase; something or someone was continually leading Ivan on to certain benchmarks. Examples of this can be found below:

- "Ivan Nikolaevich was perplexed, but not for long, because he suddenly realized that the professor must unfailingly be found in house no. 13 and most assuredly in apartment 47." (51)
