Introduction to The Master and Margarita

Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel The Master and Margarita is a whimsical satire of Soviet life, which is set both in 1930s Moscow and 2000 years earlier in ancient Yershalaim. The novel, which is known as Bulgakov’s masterpiece, was finished shortly before Bulgakov’s death in 1940 but remained unpublished until 1966. Its publication hinged on the Thaw which was part of the literary aftermath of Stalin’s death. The Master and Margarita remained unpublished until this time due to its blatant parody of the atheistic and communistic characteristics of society in Soviet Russia.
