- Consider exploring some of Bulgakov's other works such as his novels The White Guard (1926) and The Heart of a Dog (1968). The White Guard is a historical fiction and offers insight into the Russian Revolution, which helps to give some context for the Moscow in which The Master and Margarita is set. On the other hand, The Heart of a Dog is another illustration of Bulgakov's fantastical imagination and also uses satire to portray certain aspects of Soviet life.
- Consider reading Goethe's play Faust, which is referred to in The Master and Margarita and which contains similar themes to those presented in Bulgakov's novel, such as the presence of unclean powers.
