The Member of the Wedding is a coming-of-age story set in 1944 in a small town in the Deep South. The protagonist is Frankie Addams (Frankie is a nickname for Frances; she also calls herself F. Jasmine in the middle of the book), a 12-year-old girl who feels completely alone and unconnected. She longs to belong, and to be sophisticated, a "woman of the world." However, her unrealistic, and often comic, misunderstandings about the world and life reveal her naïveté.
