Students will be able to analyze the connection between a song and the story it is based on.

Common Core Standards:

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.8.5

Structure:

Play the Fleming and John Song, "The Pearl." This song is based on the story.

Ask students to listen to the song and to note connections to the story. Have students share their reflections.

Ask students:

• What is the meaning of the song?
• Who is singing it?
• What is the tone of the voice? Is it personal and aimed at someone else? Is it aimed inward? Is it hopeful?
• If a character from the story were singing this song, which character would it be?
