    Did the family lose something in gaining the pearl? If so, what did they lose?

    Strong answers will refer to the "old world" as being gone. They will explain that Juana could sense their life was slipping away the worse things got. They should relate some of the concrete details of that life, like the simplicity of being left alone, even if they did not have much, their home and their canoe. They will explain that the old song, the song of the home and of their past, was replaced by the evil song instead. They should observe that even his brother, Juan Tomas, mentions the loss of the old world.
