Erik finally allows Christine to be with Raoul because Christine proved to him that she loved Erik for himself. Christine kissed Erik’s forehead and didn’t flinch in disgust; this small action convinced Erik of her love. She also chose to be Erik’s living wife, deciding that she wouldn’t kill herself as his wife. This, too, convinced Erik that Christine truly loved him. Once he felt secure in her love for him, Erik felt that he no longer needed to control and possess Christine. Rather, she could go away from him and be happy with Raoul.
