    Similes and Metaphors

    Kind of Activity:

    Group Discussion

    Objective:

    To examine how the author uses figurative language and metaphor to create vivid descriptions

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.4, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.5.1.C

    Structure:

    Print out the following quotes on a piece of paper and give each student a copy:

    “She heard something rustling on the matting, and when she looked down she saw a little snake gliding along and watching her with eyes like jewels.”

    “Mary felt as if the drive would never come to an end, and that the wide, bleak moor was a wide expanse of black ocean through which she was passing on a strip of dry land.”
