How does the garden reflect the changes that Mary has undergone since arriving in England?
When Mary first arrived, she was unpleasant, sickly, lonely and uncared-for. The garden too had been shut away alone, unloved and uncultivated. But Mary has been given fresh air and space, and she has people like Martha and Dickon to care for her, and she’s getting healthier and happier as a result. Under Mary’s care, the garden is starting to show signs of life. She weeds, giving the bulbs space to grow and have access to sunlight. Both Mary and the garden benefit from this and are increasingly starting to grow and flourish.
