Notes to the Teacher

Before beginning the unit on The Sense of an Ending, the teacher should initiate a discussion with students about the sensitive topic of suicide. Address some of the primary causes of youth suicide as well as solutions to them other than suicide. Provide suicide prevention resources for students. It will likely be helpful to provide opportunities to discuss and/or write about suicide in the context of the novel, Camus' philosophy, and students' personal opinions throughout the reading.
