The Snowman Quotes

Quotes

“He [the snowman] took fruit from a bowl and tried on an orange for a nose, then a lemon, a banana, then cherry, then a huge pineapple. But his own tangerine fitted best so he put it back on”

The narrator

When the snowman was invited into the house by the boy, they both had a lot of fun. They wandered through the rooms and found different things that made them laugh. Trying on fruits from the bowl is one such entertainment in the house, but it also has a little bit deeper meaning than just fun. It is about self-acceptance. The snowman had an opportunity to choose any fruit he would like, but he had no problem with accepting that a tangerine is the best choice for his nose; it is his nose and he does not need any other nose, because he accepts himself with it. The significance of the scene with the nose stands also in its simplicity, as it is directed at children’s imagination, and in its simplicity is its power.

“In the boy’s playroom was a music box. They wound it up and danced to it. At the end of the dance, they both collapsed on the floor, with balloons and teddy bears all around them”

The narrator

The scene appeals to one’s imagination with a message of enjoying life. The boy with the snowman made a great match in finding pleasure in simple things and feeling happy about them. One might need an expensive toy to be contented, and one just needs a friend and a dance together. The scene quoted above refers to the ability to find happiness from within one’s inner world, not from the world of things.

“For a moment, he thought that the adventure of the night before had been nothing but a dream. But then he felt in his pocket, and the scarf that Father Christmas had given him was still there”

The narrator

The final quote accumulates all the power of the story – there is no stop for magic as there is no stop for imagination. It is obvious that the adventure was a dream, a vivid one, but still a dream. But the author comes to the decision not to tell the truth plainly, he provides a reader with a provocative idea that it has not been a dream, thus a child receives an opportunity to dream and imagine further.
