The Tempest (Film) Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Crashing Waves

King Alonso, Antonio, Gonzalo and Sebastian arrive on the island and as they do we see the waves crash hard upon the rock of the shore. It symbolizes that they have entered a dangerous place and must traverse a rocky path.

The Bottle

Stephano comes upon Caliban and Trinculo and Caliban believes Stephano to be the man in the moon fallen down to this very island as a god for him to serve. Stephano agrees to this. Stephano has been drinking deeply from a bottle of liquor and the bottle represents his drunken nature that would allow him to accept an offer such as this and to allow Caliban to believe that he is a god.

Death

Ariel comes upon King Alonso, Sebastian, Antonio and Gonzalo in the form of a black winged bird. The symbol is that he represents death to these mere mortal men. He brings them to great fear and astonishment.

Woods

King Alonso and his men walk through the woods on the island. There are thick trees with little to see through them. The symbol of this is that these men are searching in a land that they have no direction in. That they are lost and heading in no direction that is fruitful.

Black Rock

We see Prospera and Miranda stand upon the black rock and see as Caliban eating in a cave just beneath their feet. The symbol is that Caliban has become a slave to these women, that he isn't worthy to them to live at the same level as them.
