The Tempest (Film) Themes

Nature

Nature plays an important role in The Tempest, which is reflected even in its title. The film begins with a ship wreck caused by a tempest that sets the rest of the film's events in motion. Furthermore, nature operates slightly differently on the island than everywhere else in the world, the sounds that the island makes being musical and strange.

Magic

Magic is a major theme in The Tempest. Witches exist on the island, as evident by Prospera and Caliban's mother, Sycorax. Both of these women demonstrate magic in Prospera's ability to make Miranda fall asleep and awake at will, and Sycorax imprisoning Ariel in a tree. Ariel is also a magical being, fairy-like and able to move at incredible speeds. He is also capable of magic.

Love

Love is prominent in The Tempest. Miranda and Ferdinand's love for one another, for example, has an entire subplot dedicated to it in the film. Love spurs Ferdinand to work under Prospera in order to gain her approval towards his love for Miranda. Miranda is also inspired to help Ferdinand with his work for no reason other than to demonstrate her love for him.

Family

In The Tempest, family serves as a catalyst for both love and betrayal. Miranda is dedicated and loyal to her mother, which influences how Prospera interacts with other characters — she, too, wants to protect Miranda out of love for her. Prospera's brother, however, is the reason that Prospera and Miranda were cast away to the island in the first place. Prospera was usurped by him, a betrayal that resulted in her exile.

Loyalty

Loyalty is a major theme in The Tempest. Different characters are loyal to others for various reasons, whether it be out of love or out of obligation. For example, Miranda is loyal to her mother out of love. Caliban and Ariel are loyal to Prospera out of obligation, and as such, Caliban's loyalty is fickle. As soon as Caliban sees the opportunity to have new masters, he takes it.
