Structure:

Much of this section of The Water Dancer is set up for the plot to come. Hiram slowly introduces the world of Lockless and Virginia. Explain to students that while Coates takes creative license, many of the details of Lockless and Virginian society are rooted in reality. Even now, many of the plantations of the antebellum South are vacation destinations. They have elaborate websites and are popular places for people to hold weddings and other events.
