What was the purpose behind writing the story?
The author has written this book for school children to teach them the geography and the cultural values of Sweden. The writer has intended to impart the geographical lessons through a fictional story owing to the dryness of the geography subject. The book includes important landscapes of Sweden along with proper counseling regarding visiting those places. For instance, safety advice has been given related to the climate: “It is a fact that ice is always treacherous and not to be trusted.”

Why does Nils transform into an Elf?
Nils was a cruel boy with a bad temper. He used to tease his fellows and torture animals. He confines the birds in cages and grabs his family cat by its tail. He doesn't bother about inflicting pain upon others. Once he finds a mythical creature Tomette, and he tortures him along with capturing him. Tomette asks him to free him and in return he will be blessed with some fortune but Nils refuses. Tomette converts Nils into a Tomette owing to his cruel actions.

Who was Akka and why is this character significant?
Akka was the leader of a geese flock who grabbed Nils along with them. Akka acts as a guide for Nils and helps him in learning the ways of animal world. Her wise counseling assists him during his adventures. She saves his life and plays a vital role in his transformation from a cruel boy to a compassionate person.
