The book is replete with the images of Nils traveling with a flock of geese. Nils was unaware of the geography and the cultural values of his country. It was after being transformed into a Tomette that he learns about human values and his country. There are images of Nils journeying through forests, cities and various other places. He met with different people and got acquainted with their problems. He thinks that earth has transformed because he looks at it like a bird from the top. He says, “everything appeared so strange and spook like heavens were no longer blue, but encased him like a globe of green glass. The sea was milk white, the boy thought it was as if the earth had been transformed, and he was come to another world.”

Images of Torture

There are images of torturing animals, birds and different creatures. The book begins with the account of Nils as a cruel boy who tortures the farm animals. He doesn't even spare the mythological creature Tomette, despite its offer to give him certain qualities. Nils captures Tomette and does not let it go. The author has also depicted Nils capturing geese to prevent it from flying with its flock. He used to torture his cat by snatching its tail. The fox has been presented as torturing the flock of geese. It also attempts to attack Nils along with Akka who deceives it through her flight and saves her life.

Animal Imagery

The author has portrayed Nile as encountering with a flock of geese who snatch him along with them. Then there are images of Nile coming across a raven, an eagle, a mythological creature Tomette, a cat, and a moose. The author has demonstrated that after meeting these animals, and Nils realizes that he was so cruel with them on his farm. The goose Akka assists him and saves his life while the other animals also teach him different lessons of kindness and sympathy. The author has presented the animals as demonstrating the actual behavior of animals. They are presented as fictitious characters instead they act like real animals in the book.
