What does the novel, and the dinner party scene in particular, tell us about the sincerity of relationships?
Lily mentions during the dinner party that she thinks all relationships between men and women are inherently insincere. The novel as a whole has been demonstrating how impossible it is to truly know someone. By weaving from one character's internal thoughts to another, Woolf shows how the characters perceive each other incorrectly. At the dinner party, they all act interested because they think everyone else is, when really everyone else is bored but only acting interested. Does this mean all relationships are always insincere?
