Students will be able to explore the contrasts between characters in the novel

Structure:
Discuss with the students the conversations portrayed between Augustine St. Clare and his cousin Miss Ophelia about slavery and white people's interactions with black people. Throw Marie St. Clare into the mix, and note that Augustine, while he clearly does not share Marie's views, does little to stop her from accusing and imposing on the slaves in the household.
