Harriet Beecher Stowe was born Harriet Elizabeth Beecher on June 14, 1811 in Litchfield, Connecticut. The daughter of a Congregationalist minister, she was driven throughout her life by her deep Christian faith. Harriet was the sixth of eight children born to Lyman and Roxana Beecher; when she was five, her mother died, and her father later remarried a woman with whom he had three more children. Lyman Beecher was devoted to the education of his family, who often read books and studied Scripture together; later in her childhood, Stowe attended the Litchfield Female Academy, one of the best schools for girls in the nation at the time.
