Why do you think DiAngelo instructs the reader to get in touch with their breath in the last section of Chapter 1? What is the effect of appealing directly to the reader in this way?
Students should examine the subject matter DiAngelo is dealing with right before she asks the reader to breathe. Note the emotional intensity of the passage. They should also be encouraged to take a breath themselves and note their mental and physical state before and after doing so.
