Yusef Komunyakaa: Poetry Summary

Yusef Komunyakaa: Poetry Summary

Facing It

The poem is about the poet and his sense of loss of his identity. He faces an inner conflict when he finds his reflection on and off on a black polished memorial wall depending on the light. He tries to control his tears as if he was a stone with no emotions but after all, he is human flesh. Thus, the poem is about his experience while staring at the memorial wall.

Blackberries

This poem is about innocence of a child who was merrily picking berries from a thicket in the woods. His dog beside him was eyeing eyes and the child couldn’t be happier collecting berries in one hand and eating with the other. His hands were stained with the juices of berries. Suddenly, his eyes fell on road, a passer by car had two kids in the backseat, who smirked at him and at once, child was out of his happy world. He was flying in the sky with happiness earlier, and the kids’ expression brought him back to earth.
