    Identity is the main theme in the novel because it reoccurs throughout the text. Rhiannon struggles with her personality throughout the novel. Rhiannon is very keen when she starts a new relationship because she feels lonely and insecure. On the contrary, "A" does not struggle with her identity because she carries several personalities. Nevertheless, "A" has a distinct personality that makes her confident, likable, and desirable.

    The author mentions the beach severally in the novel to symbolize impulsiveness. A woman called "A" meets Rhiannon and takes her to the beach the same day, and they start a romantic relationship. Interacting with "A" on the beach makes Rhiannon realize she does not have to keep her relationship with Justin. According to Rhiannon, her relationship with Justin is stagnant, and it is high time she moves on to another relationship.
