Why might the Chorus be praying to Bacchus/Dionysos?
He is the god of wine and madness, and often his worshippers (the Bacchanals) had periods of madness. The Chorus may be claiming that the instability coming to the city of Thebes is a form of madness, that Bacchus has brought a sense of craziness and violence to the land. It may also be simply because the play would have been performed at the Dionysia!
