Teach a Boy to Clean a Fish
Kind of Activity:
Artistic Response
Objective:
Students will create an "off-camera" scene from the day's reading and discuss its effect on the character in question
Common Core Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.1
Structure:
Begin the activity by points the entire class to Vardaman's chapter, in which he brings a large fish to his father and is told to clean it himself. From here, break students into small groups. Ask students to first consider how Vardaman's point of view may affect the scene. For instance, as a child, the fish's size may seem exaggerated. Have students discuss how large they imagine the fish to be.
