Harrison Ford
Originally, Harrison Ford was not going to be involved in the movie, considered a sequel to the first, in which he had starred. Producer Andrew Kosovo went as far as to announce that it was extremely unlikely that he would feature at all. Ridley Scott joked that Harrison Ford had been a Nexxus-6 in the original Blade Runner, which meant that it was unclear if he would have survived this long. When Hampton Fencher, one of the original film's writers, was brought back on board, it was confirmed that Ford would reprise the role of Rick Deckard, although his role was not as predominant as it had been the first time around.
Ford is one of the best known action movie heroes in Hollywood history, having played Han Solo in Star Wars, Indiana Jones in the Raiders of the Lost Ark trilogy, and Deckard, in the original Blade Runner movie.Although some of his romantic comedy roles have not been particularly successful at the box office, his involvement in an action flick or a thriller is generally considered to be a guarantee of a film's commercial success.
Ryan Gosling
Gosling's involvement in the film, in which he plays the lead role of replicant K, came about because of cinematographer Roger Deakins, who sold him on the film's potential,. He was the second member of the cast to confirm that he was on board, Having recently achieved tremendous box office and critical acclaim with the satirical film The Big Short and the Academy Award-winning musical La-La Land, for which he won a Golden Globe Award in the Best Actor category, Gosling was anxious to get his teeth into something that was both controversial and gritty.
Robin Wright
Almost a year after Ryan Gosling had confirmed his involvement in the movie, Robin Wright announced that she, too, would be joining the cast. Final negotiations for her involvement lasted over a month, but the actress confirmed that she would play the role of Lieutanant Joshi a year after Gosling had done the same. Prior to starting work on Blade Runner : 2049, Wright had wrapped up another futuristic film, Wonder Woman, although most of her success during that period of time came for her work on the television series House of Cards, for which she won six Prime Time Emmy Award nominations.

Spanish actress De Armas had only made two films before accepting the role of Joi, the holographic girlfriend of Ryan Gosling's K; the role turned out to be a breakthrough performance for her, and led to her role in the mystery film Knives Out in 2019, for which she garnered a Golden Globe Award nomination in the Best Actress : Comedy or Musical category.
Jared Leto
Leto had taken a hiatus to pursue his musical career for a second time shortly before signing on to join the cast of the film. Having directed a documentary film in 2012, he won an Academy Award in 2013 for his performance as a transgender woman in Dallas Buyers' Club. Leto is known for immersing himself completely in his roles, and staying in character for the duration of the production, even when there is no actual shooting going on.
Carla Juri
Juri worked predominantly in her native Switzerland for most of her career, breaking onto the international scene with her role in Wetlands, and following this up with the role of Stelline in Blade Runner : 2049. Juri is the recipient of the Shooting Stars Award, which is given each year to ten young up and coming European actors.
Sylvia Hoeks
Dutch model turned actress Hoeks is best known for her role in Blade Runner : 2049, which led to director Fede Alvarez casting her for his adaptation of the David Lagercrantz novel The Girl in the Spider's Web. The recipient of a Golden Calf, the Dutch equivalent of an Academy Award, in 2007 for her performance in the film Duska, Hoeke made her international movie debut in 2013, playing the role of Claire Ibbetson in The Best Offer.
