Brown Girl Dreaming is a middle-grade memoir written in verse. Through a series of poems, acclaimed children's and young-adult author Jacqueline Woodson tells the story of her early childhood, her family, the society in which she grew up in three different states (Ohio, South Carolina, and New York), and her commitment to becoming a writer. The poems follow Woodson and her family from before her birth to the time that Woodson herself was ten years old.
