What does this first section reveal about the setting of the story?
In the beginning, the story flips back and forth between the Laguna Pueblo Reservation and the Philippines during World War II. The contrast is marked by the presence, or absence, of rain. There is overlap, however, between the two spaces when Tayo sees Josiah in the Philippines, in the face of a Japanese soldier. Then, we see Tayo’s ranch on the reservation where he spends a significant time alone with his thoughts. He takes care of the animals and the land. But mostly, he is trying to heal from the affects of war, though some may argue that he is stuck in his mind and in the past.
