Leslie Marmon Silko is a novelist, poet, and essayist. She is known for her lyrical language and coverage of American Indian themes. Her work most often covers feelings of dissonance between white culture and American Indian culture. Silko was born in New Mexico, which is where Ceremony is set. She is of mixed ethnicity, a combination of white, Laguna, and Mexican (also similar to Tayo from Ceremony). She grew up on the Laguna Pueblo reservation in New Mexico.
