Part of Adeline Yen Mah's stated goal in writing is to promote understanding between East and West. Students will benefit from further research into events and subjects that Mah touches on in the narrative, including Chinese history during and after World War II, the Chinese Revolution of 1949, European colonialism in Asia, and Chinese culture. Encourage students to use internet resources to carry out research, both to complete longer-term projects and to fill in their general knowledge about Chinese culture and history as they go along.
