Conversations with Friends Summary

Conversations with Friends Summary

This novel is about a college student called Frances, and her friend Bobbi. The two have been friends since school, and share a close and trusting friendship after having once been in a relationship. Francis is a level-headed aspiring writer and feminist, who believes that there should be no private property, which creates tension with the people she meets in the novel.

Frances and Bobbi's friendship is blossoming while attending university in Dublin, where they often perform poetry together. While performing one night, they are spotted by a journalist called Melissa. They become close to her and Frances in particular is impressed by Melissa's sophisticated lifestyle and home life. Later, the friends meet Melissa's husband Nick, who catches Frances' eye.

Frances and Nick become close despite their ideological differences, leading to an unexpected, intimate relationship between them. As the novel unfolds, and their relationship becomes more intense, aspects of Frances' life become more difficult, including her relationships with family and friends.
