Conversations with Friends Themes

Art and Intellectualism

This is a secondary theme running throughout the novel. Indeed, Rooney uses various mediums to convey the importance of love as a form of expression. For Melissa, she conveys this through her photography – she uses this to brag to her friends about her wealthy and accomplished life. For Bobbi and France’, their creative writing and spoken poetry are the most important part of their lives and indeed even the thing.

Love

Love is perhaps the main driver for why Frances behaves the way she does throughout the book. Having been mostly neglected by her alcoholic father, she doesn’t know what love is and what she does know is very different from the norm. this idea of warped love is what she applies when she pursues her flirtation with Nick – she knows it is wrong but she cannot stop herself because she sees an opportunity to finally gain love from someone.
